Anseriformes

These are the Anseriformes of Arkansas.  There is historically one extant family in the order of Anseriformes even though there is quite a bit of diversity.  However, there are a couple of subfamilies.  Subfamilies are given a “-nae” suffix.

There are some that are only here in the summer/breeding season (Br), migration (Mi), or winter/non-breeding (Wi), and there are some that are here year round (Yr).

Some of these birds are Rare (R), Uncommon (U), or Common (C).

Dendrocygninae-Whistling Ducks

  • Ross’s Goose (Wi/U)
  • Canada Goose (Yr/C)
  • Cackling Goose (Wi/R)

Anatinae-Dabbling Ducks (includes Wood Duck)

  • Wood Duck (Yr/C)
  • Mallard (Wi-Yr/C)
  • Gadwall (Wi/C)
  • Northern Shoveler (Wi/C)
  • Northern Pintail (Wi/C)
  • Green-winged Teal (Wi/C)
  • Blue-winged Teal (Mi/C)
  • American Wigeon (Wi/C)
  • American Black Duck (Wi/U)
  • Mottled Duck (Yr/U)

Aythyinae-Diving Ducks

  • Canvasback (Wi/C)

Merginae-Mergansers and Sea Ducks
